Founder Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Biocon Limited, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw was born in Bangalore. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology from Bangalore University and post-graduation in Malting and Brewing from Ballarat College, Melbourne University in 1975.

After deciding to move out of brewing because she thought it was a man’s job, and shift her base to Scotland, she met Leslie Auchincloss, founder of Biocon Biochemicals Limited, of Cork, Ireland, who she worked with for a short time. Her professional life and journey as an entrepreneur started soon after this stint of hers.

She faced many challenges like credibility due to her youth, gender & her untested business model. But she didn’t give up and made Biocon India the first company of the country to be able to manufacture enzymes and export them to the United States and Europe.
From starting Biocon as an industrial enzymes manufacturing company she transformed it into a fully integrated biopharmaceutical company. This was the beginning of Shaw’s success story and everything after that is history.

An IIM Ahmedabad graduate, she was quick to realize that beauty was an untapped market in India. However, the idea stemmed from the fact that multi-store outlets of beauty products ended up with sales almost worth hundreds of dollars.
But, the reason wasn’t only the product or the brand but learning from sales associates how to use the right way. And thus, Naykaa was born keeping this concept in mind. Today, the website has around 400 brands and offers around 40,000 products on its website.
Nykaa has retail partnerships with the world’s top personal care corporations like Unilever, P&G, L’Oreal, Beiersdorf, Johnson & Johnson etc.
